Patch Middle School Math Teacher Uses New Carnegie Learning Features to Boost Student Engagement
SEMBACH, Germany — A Patch Middle School math teacher is seeing positive results in the classroom after adopting the newly updated Carnegie Learning math platform to support a blended learning approach.
The platform’s improved design and functionality have made it more flexible and user-friendly, benefiting both students and teachers. Students have shown greater confidence in their math skills and a stronger willingness to tackle challenging content.
Math teacher Wagner Pierre draws inspiration from Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do philosophy, which emphasizes adaptability and practicality. He applies the same mindset in the classroom, pairing Carnegie Learning’s Interactive Assignments with MATHia sessions throughout the week. Students use vertical whiteboards for “Chalk Talk” discussions based on assignment questions, while the rest of the week is dedicated to MATHia during daily Carnegie Learning time.
“With the Carnegie Learning platform, my students are able to progress at their own speed, which frees me up to focus on giving personalized coaching to struggling students as well as enrichment to advanced students,” Pierre said.
He added that the new tools have not only improved efficiency but also shifted how students view mathematics. “The biggest change I’ve seen is confidence,” Pierre said. “Students who once hesitated to take risks in solving problems are now more willing to engage and share their thinking with the class.”
Pierre said the approach not only helps students develop stronger math skills but also supports DoDEA’s mission to prepare future-ready learners by improving teaching effectiveness and student engagement.
